"NEW KIDS IN THE FAMILY" BACKPACKS

In 1998, we embarked on a mission to establish a program that would provide a backpack full of personal items that could be given to each new foster child who is placed into care.  We thought it would do wonders for the children's self-esteem and make them feel a bit more secure as they entered strange new surroundings, filled with uncertainty.  We are happy to say that the program has taken off like a rocket!  Numerous community groups have been inspired by our idea, and have kept the program going since it's inception.  Feedback from foster children has been overwhelmingly positive, and we hope that we can continue to provide this valuable service to the children.

This program has been made possible by the generosity of a number of supporters, including:

  • Automatic Data Processing, Inc., in Parsippany, who donated nearly 200 backpacks to our program in March 2004.

  • Courtney Zellman, a Long Valley Senior Girl Scout who supplied nearly 50 bags of items for use in our backpacks

  • Long Valley Girl Scout Troop 602, who started the program as their Silver Award, under the guidance of Betty Wilson

  • Other Long Valley Area Girl Scout Troops

  • St. Peter's Church, Parsippany

  • Old Farmers Road School, Long Valley

  • Flocktown/Kossman Schools, Long Valley
